I stood up when she arrived at the café at 6:00 pm that evening.

“Hello,” she said, giving me a quick kiss, then looking quizzically at my friend Gavin.

I’d texted him right after class, as I knew he was out this way visiting his mom for a few days. Usually he lived downtown Chicago but spent a couple days each week in New York.

“Ariana, this is Gavin. My agent, and friend. He’d like to talk with you.”

She paused midway in the act of sitting down, then shook his hand energetically. “I love Sutherland’s books! I keep wanting him to do a sub series about Margot, Chief Heath’s daughter.”

Gavin grinned, as did I. I knew this would be a fun dinner.

An hour later, the two of them were deciding when Ariana would send him some of her work. I knew he’d been looking for diverse characters in cozy mysteries, and I suspected Ariana might be able to help him with that.

“Well, I do have a cozy mystery outlined for the library, but my hot romance stories are doing so well, I kind of gave up on it.” She was excited, her dark eyes sparkling.

“I hear you’ve gotten Sutherland here thinking about doing a serial. I should give you part of the commission,” he said.

She looked at me, then squeezed my hand. “I had him trapped in his office, and forced him to come up with ideas.”

“How did you two meet?” She asked. “Writer’s conference?”

I froze.

“Um, at Club Regal downtown.”

I hoped she hadn’t heard of it.

“Is that the old BDSM club in Wicker Park?”

“It’s under new management,” Gavin said smoothly.

I knew he was part owner.

“Seriously? An actual club? Can we go?”

Gavin’s grin widened.
